Is there anything more iconic in the Netherlands than a field of tulips stretching as far as the eye can see?

Every spring, from mid-March through early May, the country bursts into color — and it's an absolute dream for photography lovers. Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning to chase that perfect shot, finding the best tulip fields near Amsterdam can be a magical experience.

As a local photographer, I get asked all the time: Where should I go to photograph tulips near Amsterdam? The good news? You're in the perfect place to find out. From the famous Keukenhof to hidden countryside gems, I'm sharing my favorite spots, personal tips, and photography advice so you can make the most of tulip season. Let's dive in!

When to See Tulips in Bloom

The best time to see tulips in the Netherlands is typically early to late April. Weather can influence the bloom slightly, so always check a local flower forecast before planning your trip. The most reliable source is Tulip Festival Amsterdam which updates bloom reports during the season.

Bonus tip: Midweek visits = fewer people + easier photos!

Best Tulip Fields Near Amsterdam

1. Lisse & Keukenhof Gardens (Most Iconic)

If you're only going to see one place, make it Lisse. Located just 35–40 minutes from Amsterdam, this is the tulip capital of the country. It's home to the world-famous Keukenhof Gardens, which features over 7 million blooming flowers.

Photography Tips:

  • Arrive early for soft light and smaller crowds.

  • Use long focal lengths (like 85mm or 135mm) to compress rows of color.

  • Tripods aren’t allowed inside Keukenhof, but handheld works great.

2. Hillegom and Noordwijkerhout (Quieter Alternatives)

Just a short bike ride or drive from Lisse, these areas are covered in working tulip farms with stunning fields of pink, red, and yellow. They’re less crowded than Keukenhof but just as breathtaking.

Photography Tips:

  • Be respectful of farmers: only walk between rows if it’s clearly allowed.

  • Overcast days make colors pop more vividly in photos.

3. Goeree-Overflakkee (For the Adventurous)

A bit farther from Amsterdam (about 90 mins by car), this island region in South Holland is less touristy and features wide, peaceful tulip fields.

Why Go: Perfect if you want to explore off the beaten path and avoid heavy crowds.

4. Flevoland (Massive Fields, Local Feel)

Located northeast of Amsterdam, Flevoland is home to the largest flower bulb region in the Netherlands. Fields around Dronten and Espel are especially photogenic.

Photography Tip:

  • Bring a step stool or ladder for elevated shots across rows of color.

Tulip Photography Tips for Travelers

1. Avoid Midday Sun

Harsh light flattens color. Mornings and late afternoons are best for rich tones and depth.

2. Wear the Right Outfit

Neutral tones or pastels look great against tulip colors. Avoid patterns that clash.

3. Mind Your Step

Never walk into private fields without permission. Stick to public paths or designated visitor routes. Farmers welcome photos but not damage.

4. Play With Angles

Get low to the ground or shoot through flowers for a dreamy layered look.

5. Be Ready to Improvise

Weather in spring is unpredictable. Cloudy skies or even a bit of mist can create moody, stunning shots. Don’t cancel — adapt!

How to Get to the Tulip Fields from Amsterdam

  • Keukenhof & Lisse: Direct buses run from Amsterdam RAI during tulip season.

  • Flevoland: Best reached by car, or train to Dronten + bike rental.

  • Hillegom/Noordwijkerhout: Easily accessible by train + local bike rental.

Tip: I recommend combining train + bike for a flexible and scenic day trip.
